Christine Lagarde will step down as ECB President on February 7, 2027, ahead of her term’s scheduled end in October.

ECB President Christine Lagarde announced she will leave the European Central Bank on February 7, 2027, accelerating the race for one of the world’s most influential positions, according to the report.

Lagarde will step down earlier than her term’s scheduled end in October 2027, a decision that has raised questions about the institution’s future direction. She became the fourth leader of the institution and the second French head, succeeding Mario Draghi in 2019 after a prolonged selection process. Her departure initiates one of the EU’s most significant leadership contests in recent history, as the role carries immense responsibility for managing monetary policy across 21 Eurozone countries and over 350 million people.

The announcement comes amid the ECB’s struggle with accelerating inflation driven by the war between the US and Iran, geopolitical instability, volatile bond markets, and massive EU defense and infrastructure spending. These challenges have tested the central bank’s ability to maintain price stability while supporting economic growth. The new leader will inherit a complex mandate, including addressing energy price volatility, supply chain disruptions, and the long-term effects of pandemic-era monetary policies.

Only one other ECB governor, Dutchman Wim Duisenberg, did not complete his term. His shortened mandate was prearranged in 1998 to resolve a deadlock between France and Germany during the ECB’s creation. This historical precedent shows the delicate balance between national interests and the bank’s independence, a tension that may resurface during the current leadership selection process. The new leader must handle not only economic challenges but also the political trends that have shaped the ECB’s evolution since its inception.
