Vikram rocket carries lab grown diamond to space

Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram‑1 launch placed the world’s first lab‑grown diamond jewellery payload into orbit, marking a crossover between India’s emerging private space sector and its growing lab‑grown diamond industry.
Payload details and design process
The piece, called Cosmos Bloom Diamond, was created with Indian lab‑grown diamond brand Cosmos Diamonds. Handcrafted in gold, it holds 16.9 carats of diamonds that were grown and set entirely in India. Its lotus‑inspired shape reflects the nation’s cultural symbols while also serving a functional role during the flight.
Developers said the design underwent more than 100 sketches and 11 production rounds. Engineers from Skyroot worked with the jewellers to test metals and structural components, eventually combining lab‑grown diamonds, precision‑crafted gold, custom aluminium parts and tiny gold replicas of rocket screws that secured the lotus‑shaped structure.
Technical clearances were granted by Skyroot and the regulator IN‑SPACe before the payload joined five other items on the Vikram‑1 mission.
Launch and mission context
Vikram‑1 lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre carrying six payloads. Alongside Cosmos Bloom Diamond, the launch deployed Skyroot’s Earth observation satellite SCOPE, the CubeSat SOLARAS from Grahaa Space, and two German‑built technology demonstrators, uD3PP and mD3RN.

After achieving orbit, onboard cameras recorded sunlight striking the diamond, producing a visual that the companies highlighted as a symbolic moment of convergence between space technology and luxury manufacturing.
